Lets get those elephants collared!
To achieve their vision of a safe future for elephants and their landscapes forever, Space for Giants works to foster the vital co-existence of people and elephants. By collaring elephants to monitor their movements, Space for Giants helps the authorities put in place land use strategies and long term solutions.
Space for Giants is currently working on an a electric fencing project to reduce human elephant conflict in one of its hotspots in Kenya by 90%. The collars currently deployed are providing information on how elephants are interacting with these fences. Crop raiding has been reduced significantly but the collar data also show how elephants are exploiting weaknesses in fence alignments and designs.
Collaring elephants provides data on their movement patterns, helps scientists understand elephant ecology, helps identify elephant migration paths to guide planning and policy-making at regional, national, and international levels, including long-term planning and evaluation.
