Summary

To carry out the Space for Giants vision of securing a future for elephants and their landscapes forever, the co-existence of people and elephants is vital. By monitoring their movements through collaring, Space for Giants can put in place land use strategies and long term solutions.

Description

Space for Giants is currently working on a county wide electric fencing project to reduce human elephant conflict by 90%. The collars currently deployed are providing information on the performance of these fences. The fence have reduced crop raiding significantly but also show how elephants are exploiting weaknesses in fence alignments and designs.

Solution

The importance of collaring elephants: 1. Provide date on elephant movement patterns. 2. Global understanding of elephant ecology. 3. Identification of elephant corridors and home ranges for planning. 4. Provide information to guide policy making at regional, national and international levels. 5. Provide information to support the National Spatial Plan. 6. Support long term elephant monitoring and evaluation of interventions implemented.
